Government: Saudi Arabia is governed as a monarchy in accordance with Islamic law.

Size Matters: The total land area of Saudi Arabia is 2,149,690 sq km, which ranks as the 15th largest country in the world.

Cities: The national capital and largest city is Riyadh, followed in size by Jeddah, Mecca and Medina, respectively.

Did You Know? Saudi Arabia is nicknamed the “Land of the Two Holy Mosques” in reference to the cities of Mecca and Medina, the two most holy sites in the Muslim religion.

Saudi Arabia Careers and Employment: 

Population:  As of July 2009, Germany’s population was estimated at 28,686,633, the 42nd most populous country in the world. 

Business Environment:  Saudi Arabia was ranked the 16th best country in the world for business in a 2009 Doingbusiness.com ranking.

Top Industries:  In terms of paid jobs, the labor force in 2005 was comprised of services (71.9%), industry (21.4%) and agriculture (6.7%).

Taxes:  Saudi Arabia sanctions a Corporate Income Tax of 20%; an Individual Income Tax of 20%; but no national Value Added Tax.

Weather:  Saudi Arabia typically endures a harsh, dry desert climate with extreme temperature variations.

Education:  Saudi Arabia’s nationwide education system, which provides free education through the university level, is comprised of more than 24,000 schools including 20 formal universities and many additional colleges and training institutions.

Saudi Arabia Economics: 

In General:  Saudi Arabia’s economy is based primarily in oil, with significant government control over many industries. The country is a leader in of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Services:  The services sector makes up the largest proportion of the Saudi Arabian workforce, yet a great majority of the country’s Gross Domestic Product involves the oil industry. As Saudi Arabia slowly diversifies its economy, the services sector is expected to grow.

Industry:  Oil wealth has made possible the rapid economic development of Saudi Arabia, with the entire economy fundamentally linked to its petroleum industry. Oil typically accounts for over 90% of Saudi Arabia’s exports and nearly three-fourths of the government’s revenue.

Agriculture:  With its desert terrain and formidable oil industry, the agriculture sector plays a minimal role in the Saudi Arabian economy.

Did you know?  Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest exporter of petroleum and possesses approximately 20% of the world’s proven oil reserves.
