Egypt Careers and Employment:

Population:  As of July 2009, Egypt’s population was estimated at 82,329,758, thus standing as the 15th most populous country in the world.

Business Environment:   Egypt was ranked the 114th best country in the world for business and the 41st best country to start a business in a 2009 Doingbusiness.com ranking.

Top Industries:  In terms of paid jobs, the labor force in 2005 was divided between services (51%), agriculture (32%) and industry (17%).

Taxes:  Egypt sanctions a Corporate Income Tax of 20%; an Individual Income Tax of 10-20%; and a Value Added Tax of 10%.

Quality of Life:  In a recent “Quality of Living Global City Ranking” by Mercer, Cairo (#93) was ranked in the top 100 of the “City Infrastructure” ranking.

Weather:  Egypt experiences a desert climate with hot, dry summers and moderate winters.

Education:  Recent estimates show only 71% of Egypt’s population as literate, yet the country incorporates a free compulsory education system and is home to a variety of both government-run and private schools. 

Egypt Economics:

In General:  Previously regarded as highly centralized, Egypt has recently implemented significant economic reforms to liberalize its economy. The fertile Nile River valley region is the center of Egyptian economic enterprise, which is encouraged by profitable mined resources.

Services:  Cairo is known as a lively economic hub for the region, incorporating a great majority of Egypt’s service-related occupations. Tourism is an important leader in the service sector, along with a growing finance and insurance industry.

Industry:  Egypt’s industrial sector is led by an energy market based on coal, oil, natural gas and hydropower. The export of natural gas, of which Egypt maintains sizeable reserves, is one of the most valuable pieces of the national economy. Chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing along with food processing and textiles supplement the energy-based industry.

Agriculture:  Agriculture makes up a considerable portion of Egypt’s economy, with crops such as cotton, rice and wheat coupled with livestock products including cattle, sheep and water buffalo.
